    How the dress is drafted

The straight dress is our basic dress block, checked against the SCUT pattern maker, with semi-fitted ease: 2⅜ in6 cm at the bust, 9 at the waist, 5 at the hip. The pattern maker divides the difference between bust and waist among the side seams, the center back seam and the darts — with more waist ease, the darts are shallower. From the hip, the sides run straight down. The neckline and sleeve are your choice, as with the sheath dress.

We checked the draft against proven commercial patterns of the same style: the key measurements match.

The pattern maker checks the draft itself: bust and hip, back waist length, shoulder seams, bust dart, matching side seams, and sleeve cap against the armhole. The results are in the "Draft check" section.

    How to print and tape

Download the PDF on Letter or A4 sheets and print at 100% scale, without "fit to page". The first sheet has the test square: measure it with a ruler. The sheets are taped with an overlap along the ⅜ in1 cm strips; sheet numbers and the assembly diagram are on the first page. For a copy shop or plotter, choose "One-sheet PDF".

    What you get

The back with darts and a zipper mark, the front on the fold with darts, and the sleeve with notches — full size, with seam allowances.

    FAQ

    How loose is it?

Ease is 2⅜ in6 cm at the bust, 9 at the waist, 5 at the hip: the waist darts are shallower than on the sheath dress, and the dress doesn't hug the waist but softly suggests it. You can change the ease in the form: more at the waist makes the dress straighter.

    Which neckline should I choose?

Round — versatile, 1⅝ in4 cm below the base of the neck. Boat — wide and shallow, it shows the collarbones. V-neck — 4¾ in12 cm below the base of the neck, it visually lengthens the silhouette. "At the base of the neck" — like the basic dress block, for a collar or a formal dress. The neckline is finished with a facing or bias binding.

    Where is the closure?

An invisible zipper in the center back seam: from the neckline to 7⅛ in18 cm below the waist. The pattern maker writes the zipper length under the draft.

    Ready-made patterns

The pattern maker is in beta. Patterns are drafted by formula and checked against proven patterns, but mistakes are possible: sew a test version from inexpensive fabric before cutting into the good stuff. Found a problem? Let us know.
