How the kids' block is drafted

Choose a height and the tool fills in the child's measurements for that height from standard body measurements tables: bust and hip, back waist length and garment length. If the child is slimmer or bigger than their peers, adjust the bust — neck, shoulder width and armhole depth still come from the height. Up to age 9–10, boys' and girls' figures are almost the same, so the pattern fits both.

The kids' block differs from the adult one. The neckline is wider by ⅜ in1 cm on each side so the head fits through: a child's head is large relative to the neck. Children's shoulders are wider relative to the bust, so the shoulder slope is smaller, and for little ones it gets even smaller in proportion to height. The sleeve cap is low, and the cap itself is ⅝ in1.5 cm shorter than the armhole — knit fabric eases in when set in; sleeve length and hem width are filled in by height on the "Sleeve" tab.

We checked the draft against proven commercial patterns for the same style: the key measurements match.

    Sleeve and hood

Draft the block, then go to the "Sleeve" tab: the tool takes this block's armhole and makes the cap lower for a dropped shoulder. On the "Hood" tab, the hood neckline is taken from this block's neckline.

    How to print and tape

Download the PDF on Letter or A4 sheets and print at 100%, without "fit to page". The first sheet has the test square: measure it with a ruler. Tape the sheets with an overlap along the ⅜ in1 cm strips; sheet numbers and the assembly guide are on the first page. For a copy shop or plotter, choose "One-sheet PDF".

    What you get

The sweatshirt front and back on the fold at full size: armhole notches for the sleeve and a notch at the waistline, grainline, seam allowances and hem allowance.

    FAQ

How do I make it room to grow?

Choose a height one size up (by 2⅜ in6 cm), but keep the garment and sleeve length from your own height, or turn up the sleeve hem. That way the sweatshirt is roomier but not too long.

What if the child is between heights?

Choose the next height up and adjust the bust if you know it. Neck, shoulder and armhole measurements will then have a little extra room, and you can shorten the garment length by ⅜–¾ in1–2 cm.

    Ready-made patterns

The pattern maker is in beta. Patterns are drafted by formula and checked against proven patterns, but mistakes are possible: sew a test version from inexpensive fabric before cutting into the good stuff. Found a problem? Let us know.
